The Role of HR In Enhancing Employee Wellness
Employees form the core of any organization be it big or small. Companies conduct wellness programs and other related activities to encourage their employees to work in a healthy and happy environment. Such initiatives will not only make the staff happy, but also increase their interest to work hard. Every office has a mix of employees who fall under different categories. Some may be healthy without any prevailing medical conditions, but not everyone. The human resource management team initiates wellness programs to improve the health and well-being of an employee.
Why it is important to have wellness programs?
HR plays a vital role in building the core of the organization. Employees, being the core for any organization require wellness programs to stay active and productive. In order to boost employee engagement, the human resource team takes a series of wellness initiatives. Some of them include tours, yoga classes, health checkup, counseling, etc. Further, they also conduct classes on workplace ethics, safety issues, personality development, and so on. These sessions not only improve the overall behavior of the employees, but also increase their overall wellness.
Employee Wellness Initiatives
Various programs are provided by the HR to boost the overall functioning of the employees in the organization. Given below are some of the wellness initiatives to be taken.
Almost all the organizations have a fixed timing of 7 to 8 working hours. Those who work in the computer sector in particular have to sit for long hours that result in various health issues. From back pain to eye problem, muscle pain to neck pain, they may experience a series of ailments. Having flexible work timings provide employees the opportunity to rest and work effectively. The HR personnel can put this plan into action after consulting the higher authorities. This serves as a win-win situation for both the organization and the employees.
Due to the hectic work schedule, it becomes difficult for employees to follow a healthy diet and take adequate rest. Having food at odd hours and lack of sleep can lead to various health ailments that include diabetes, obesity, blood pressure, cholesterol, arthritis, etc. To prevent absenteeism due to sickness, HR should introduce fitness programs that focus on addressing all the common health problems. Yoga classes can help the employees reduce stress, maintain proper body weight and relax their mind.
Various training programs can be held at the workplace to improve the overall behavior of the employees. This may include educational training programs relating to work, personality development, etiquette, health & hygiene, and other related topics. Trainings related to emergency medical procedures, safety and awareness, etc. should also be provided as a part of the wellness programs. Coworkers can also be trained on topics such as workplace ethics, smoking, mental and physical health, etc.
Rewards and recognition:
Every once in a while, the employees should be appreciated for the hard work they put in to make the organization grow. Rewards can be provided in the form of incentives, gift vouchers, health vouchers, membership offers, travel vouchers, and more. Such rewards will encourage the employees to actively participate in wellness programs and contribute more towards the betterment of the organization. The HR should speak with the higher authorities and formulate ways to boost the participation of the employees in any proposed wellness program.
Organizing social events:
One of the best ways to improve teamwork and communication is to organize social events. The office environment at times can be quite hectic where employees will have no time to spare for leisure activities. Keeping this in mind, the HR can organize social events such as a small get-together party, dinner, vacation, games, etc. to increase the personal bonding between the members in the organization. Exposing workers to new events and activities will improve their knowledge and social behavior.
By conducing wellness programs, both the organization and the employees can get benefited to a great extent. After hosting the wellness programs, tracking should also be done to ensure the effectiveness of the training. Further, wellness programs should be planned prior and also followed up. No wellness program can give results right away and hence such programs should be frequently conducted and monitored as well. The employees should also be assessed and the results of the programs should also be tracked on a regular basis.
